About Bay Area Garden Nerd

Welcome to Bay Area Garden Nerd, where we dig into the science, art, and joy of gardening — right here in our unique Bay Area microclimates.

I’m an intermediate-level gardener with about four years of hands-on experience growing food in the Bay. I’ve gardened in Daly City, South San Francisco, and now San Mateo — each with its own challenges and quirks. My goal is to make planting here less confusing and more rewarding by combining reliable gardening research with real-world trial and error.

Along the way, I’ve teamed up with my witty robot assistant, GrowBot, who’s always eager to “dig up” the latest tips, tricks, and planting wisdom. (GrowBot’s also been known to sneak in a few puns — it’s part of the charm.)

This blog focuses on vegetables, herbs, and flowers that thrive in our climate, with practical advice for gardeners at all stages. Whether you have a sprawling backyard or a tiny balcony, you’ll find resources, planting guides, and seasonal tips to make your garden flourish.

Why I Garden

I started gardening as a hobby, but it quickly became a passion. There’s something deeply satisfying about growing your own food, especially in a place as challenging — and rewarding — as the Bay Area. Now, I’m raising a new daughter, and I want her to grow up with her hands in the soil, learning where food comes from and being part of this garden community from the very start.

Meet GrowBot

GrowBot is our charming, research-savvy robot gardening assistant. Think of him as your friendly planting buddy who’s always ready with a fact, a joke, or a gentle reminder not to plant tomatoes in January.

Our Garden

From heirloom tomatoes to quick-growing greens, my garden is where I test the tips and techniques we share here. It’s a living laboratory — complete with experiments that sometimes fail, but always teach us something new.

And yes — if you’re not planting Sungolds, are you even gardening?
